High school stages ‘Into the Woods’

T he Tahoma High School musical begins this weekend, and it may be just the ticket for the elementary school crowd.

This year’s musical is Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” which follows a baker and his wife as they encounter well-known fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk.

“The second act tells us what happened to all of these characters after their ‘happily ever after,’ ” says drama teacher and musical director Melissa Corby.

Corby recommends the musical for children ages 8 and up.

The production will be performed at the district’s only auditorium, the Tahoma Middle School theater. Shows start at 7 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, and again next Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 10-12.  A matinee will be offered at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students or senior citizens, and $5 for children under 5.

The leads are played by students Cole Wilhelm as the baker, Allie Hilde as the baker’s wife, Katie Duffy as Cinderella, Brock DenHerder as Jack, Justyne Snyder as Little Red Riding Hood and Melissa Maricich as the witch.

The music is directed by Ken Riggs, with Michael Hamann designing the lighting and sets and Stephanie Fiskum designing the costumes.
